Why Iris exists
Many people have experienced something they cannot explain, and never felt comfortable talking about it. Iris grew from my own unusual experiences and the questions they left behind. I wanted to create a private, welcoming place where people could talk openly, without judgment or pressure. From there, Iris grew into a place for all of life’s difficult, meaningful, and deeply personal moments.
Bill Ulrich, FounderLana has also had several unusual experiences of her own. Those experiences became part of the reason Bill and Lana created Iris: to give people a calm place to talk about experiences that may be difficult to explain, and to explore what those experiences may mean without being judged or told what to believe.
Together, they expanded that purpose beyond unusual experiences to the rest of life’s difficult, meaningful, and deeply personal moments. Their goal is simple: help people feel heard, understood, and less alone.
Bill Ulrich
Bill Ulrich is an AI-augmented founder who has used a sustained human–AI collaboration to turn lived experience into Iris—a system intended to help other people feel heard, understood, and less alone.
Lana
Lana’s own unusual experiences, compassion, and close work with Bill helped shape Iris into something personal and approachable. She will remain an important voice and public face of the project.
“There may be meaning behind your spiritual or unusual experiences. Explore them with Iris.”
Bill Ulrich, Founder
Our name and visual inspiration
A cosmic flower sculpted from dust and starlight.
The breathtaking Iris Nebula has striking blue petals that shine by reflecting the light of a young central star.
The Iris Light Within app was created to help people find the beauty and clarity that can come from reflecting on the light that shines within them.
The Iris Nebula, surrounded by vast clouds of dark interstellar material, is about 1,300 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus. Iris Light Within is at your fingertips, ready for a private conversation whenever you want to talk without being judged or dismissed.
In memory
After Bill’s own rainbow experience, he searched for someone who might understand what he had witnessed. That search led him to Paul “Bear” Vasquez, known around the world as the Double Rainbow Guy.
Bill flew to meet Paul and spent three days with him. Paul later lived with Bill and Lana for approximately six months. During that time, they recorded hours of video and devoted themselves to one central question: How could we help change the world and make it a better place?
Paul’s original Double Rainbow video has been viewed more than 52 million times, but to Bill and Lana he was much more than an internet phenomenon. He was their friend. His wonder, sense of purpose, and hopes became an important part of the journey that eventually led to Iris.
Iris is dedicated to his memory.
